How to turn Shopify orders into a daily production list
If you make to order, the useful question each morning is how many of each thing to make. MakeFlow reads your open, unfulfilled Shopify orders and turns them into one Make Today list.
The problem
The orders screen is a list of customers, not a list of work. The same candle, print or bake can sit on three open orders, with a different quantity on each. Add a new order at 9am, cancel one at 10, fulfil another at lunch, and the count you wrote down first thing is wrong.
Finished-goods inventory does not answer this either. Make-to-order stock is often zero on purpose. You need the unfulfilled demand, totalled.
Doing it by hand
The manual version is to open every unfulfilled order, write the variants down, and add the quantities. Some people export the orders to a spreadsheet and use a pivot table. Both work on a quiet day. Both go stale the moment an order is edited, cancelled or fulfilled, and neither gives you a tick list for the bench.
Build the Make Today list with MakeFlow
There is no separate setup beyond installing the app. MakeFlow builds the list from the orders that are still open and unfulfilled.
- Install MakeFlow from the Shopify App Store and open it in the Shopify admin. The install button is on the MakeFlow listing (opens in a new tab). The Make Today list is ready after install.
- Read the list as quantities by product and variant. It is one list for the open, unfulfilled orders, not one block per order.
- Where the same variant is on more than one order, MakeFlow adds those quantities into a single total.
- Leave the list to update itself when an order is created, edited, cancelled or fulfilled. Fulfilled orders drop off.
- Tick items off as you make them, so the list shows what is still to do.
The plan price is on the Shopify App Store listing (opens in a new tab).
Tips
- Trust the list for open, unfulfilled orders only. A fulfilled order is no longer work, so it leaves.
- Do not add the same variant twice in your head. If it is on two orders, the list already shows one total.
- An edit to an order quantity, a cancellation, or a new order changes the list. You do not rebuild it in the morning.
- Tick an item when it is made. The tick is how you see what is left; the order totals underneath still follow Shopify.
- If you also need to know whether you have the raw materials for that list, that is a separate job. MakeStock tracks materials and how many units you can make. MakeFlow does not.
Questions
Which orders are on the Make Today list?
Open, unfulfilled orders. Fulfilled orders drop off. Cancelled orders leave the list as well, because the list updates when an order is cancelled.
Are quantities added up across orders?
Yes. MakeFlow totals quantities by product and variant. The same variant on two open orders is one total, not two separate lines to add up yourself.
Do I rebuild the list every morning?
No. Install MakeFlow and the list is ready. It updates when orders are created, edited, cancelled or fulfilled. Tick items off as you make them.
Where is the MakeFlow price?
The plan price is on the Shopify App Store listing (opens in a new tab). The listing is also where you install the app.
